Hospitality Degrees Offered at Southern Utah University

Southern Utah University offers a minor in Hotel, Resort, and Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Resort, and Hospitality Management – Food and Beverage Management Emphasis, and a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Resort, and Hospitality Management – Lodging and Convention Management Emphasis. The programs prepare students to pursue management positions in the hospitality field. Students learn about business operations, management, financial services, leadership, customer service, and event planning.

The Minor in Hotel, Resort and Hospitality Management requires the completion of a total of 18 credits, including foundation, core, and elective courses. The required courses include Introduction to Hospitality Management, Hospitality Safety and Sanitation Management, Front Office and Hotel Analytics, Strategic Customer Service, and Tourism Management.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Hotel, Resort, and Hospitality Management – Food and Beverage Management Emphasis and Lodging and Convention Emphasis require the completion of at least 120 semester hours. The required prerequisites include Introduction to Hospitality Management and Accounting Principles. The Bachelor of Arts degree requires a 16 credit foreign language component. The Bachelor of Science degree requires a 12 credit math or science minimum component. For both degrees, the hotel, resort, and hospitality courses include Hospitality and Sanitation Management, Quality Food Production, Tourism Management, Restaurant Management, Hospitality Managerial Finance, Hospitality Management Systems, Facilities and Housekeeping Management, Front Office and Hotel Analytics, and Strategic Customer Service. The food and beverage management core requirements include: Beverage Management, International Cuisine, and Special Topics in Hospitality Management. The lodging and convention management core requirements include: Meetings and Convention Management, Resort Recreation Management, and Special Topics in Hospitality Management.

About Southern Utah University

Southern Utah University is a public postsecondary institution located in Cedar City, Utah. It was established in 1897 as a teacher training school called Branch Normal School. In 1913 the school became Branch Agricultural College to demonstrate its academic offerings focusing on agriculture and related areas. It became the College of Southern Utah in 1953 and Southern Utah State College in 1969. It finally became Southern Utah University in 1991. Today, it is home to nearly 9,000 students on its rural 129-acre campus. It operates on the semester-based academic calendar.

Federal Work Study

The federal government funds the Federal Work Study program that enables students to work to help pay for their college education.
