About Terra State Community College

Terra State Community College is a community college often called Terra State. The Vanguard Vocational Center opened in Fremont, Ohio as a vocational training institute. As the center could not accommodate all students, the Vanguard Technical Institute opened in 1968. This new school offered evening classes and used the rooms and buildings on the center’s campus. It earned the right to offer degree programs the following year. This led to the institute adding associate degree programs in business and applied science fields to its curriculum. It became the Terra Technical College at the beginning of the 1970s and Terra State Community College in the 1990s.

Terra State added residence halls to its campus in 2018, making it one of only two community colleges in Ohio to offer on-campus housing. Though several hundred students live in those facilities, many students still commute to the campus. Terra State belongs to several organizations that allow health information and nursing students to become members and gain access to professional opportunities and resources. Phi Theta Kappa also has a presence on the campus and accepts new students each year based on their grades. More than 2,400 students attend Terra State every year.

Terra State Community College Accreditation Details

The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) granted Terra State regional accreditation. This accreditation covers all the college’s degree and certificate programs and allows students to transfer to the college and to apply for financial aid. It also has approval from the Ohio Department of Education to operate in the state. The college’s nursing, physical therapy, health information and allied health programs all have accreditation also.

Terra State Community College Application Requirements

Though Terra State does not charge an application fee, it asks students to pick which application meets their needs. Most will use the application designed for first-time college students, but there are also applications available for transfer and guest students as well as those applying to a tech program and students still in high school. The application for first-time college students is suitable for those who earned college credits while in high school. Terra State encourages students to visit the campus and take a tour before using the application. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete this application. Students need their social security numbers, home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and some information about their high schools to apply.

Once a student completes the application, he or she will need to submit either a GED or high school transcript and apply for financial aid. Those who want to apply for institutional scholarships must also complete the scholarship application. Terra State then asks that students sign up for a placement test and schedule an appointment with an education counselor. Placement tests are not required of students who submit a standardized test score, but all students must meet with an academic counselor before they can register for classes.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Terra State charges a tuition rate of $176 per credit hour with a $30 per credit hour fee. Full-time students who take 12 credit hours will pay $2,472 per semester. The rate remains the same if they take anywhere from 12 to 18 credits of classes. Once they take 19 credits or more of classes, they’ll pay $206 per credit hour on top of the $2,472 amount. Nonresidents pay the same $30 fee but also pay a tuition rate of $352 per credit hour. To take 12 to 18 credits of classes, they’ll pay $4,584 each semester.

Paying for college is easy because Terra State offers financial aid packages for any student who files the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). An application is available for those who want to apply for scholarships. They may qualify for programs because they go back to school or because they had good grades in high school and a high standardized test score. Jobs on the college’s campus are available for students who qualify for work-study. Students can keep their jobs as long as they maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. All students in the hospitality programs at Terra State Community College can get federal loans and grants too.
