Delaware State University

Department of Business Administration

Established in Dover in 1891 as a college for African-American students, Delaware State University is a public land grant university that serves over 3700 students. Its current student population is 75% African-American with a growing diversity that includes Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic and international students. Accredited by the Middle State Association of Colleges and Universities, the school’s five colleges offer 52 undergraduate degrees, 25 master’s degrees and five doctoral degree programs. Hospitality and Tourism Management (BS)

Delaware State’s Hospitality and Tourism Management degree is accredited by both the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA) and the Association to Advance Colleges of Business (AACSB). The program provides real world experience through its requirement of two internships that total 600 hours of hospitality management work experience. It offers a multicultural focus that prepares students for success in the international hospitality industry. Students complete 122 credit hours for their degree which includes General Education courses and 25 credit hours of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) courses in the major plus one HTM elective. They receive a strong foundation in business fundamentals in their classes and have access to cutting edge on-campus lodging, restaurant and event planning and management facilities. They study financial accountability and controls, event planning and management, tourism planning and hospitality law. Project-based assignments simulate real-world business situations and help students develop management skills and competencies.

Hospitality and Tourism Management (BS) With Concentration in Casino Management

The Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) program with a concentration in Casino Management requires a total of 122 credit hours. After completing 58 hours of General Education courses, students complete 34 hours of Hospitality and Tourism Management courses and 30 hours of Casino Management courses. Students also must participate in two internships that provide actual industry experience. The major prepares students for leadership roles and helps them develop the managerial competencies and skills needed to succeed in the casino and gaming industry. Students study trends, policies and issues in casino management. Courses in the Casino Management concentration include Introduction to the Hospitality Industry, Introduction to Tourism Concepts, Sanitation and Safety, Casino Operations Management, Food Production Management, Restaurant Management, Hospitality Law and Legal Environment and Gaming Tourism and Casino Marketing.

Delaware Tech – Stanton-Wilmington

Department of Business

The Delaware General Assembly founded Delaware Technical Community College in 1967. An open-admission school, this community college system currently consists of four campuses and holds full accreditation from the Commission of Higher Education, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. New Castle County operates two locations, one in the city of Stanton and one in Wilmington. Delaware Tech’s Stanton/Wilmington Campus offers associate degree programs and community service programs. Students can also complete the first two years of a four-year degree program at Delaware Tech and transfer to a four-year institution once they complete their General Education courses.

Hospitality Management – Associate Degree

The associate degree in Hospitality Management prepares students for entry level careers in the growing hospitality industry including jobs as hotel concierges, cruise ship hospitality managers, hotel conference and special events managers, resort managers, restaurant managers and travel agents. Students receive a solid business background from their coursework as well as knowledge of hospitality operations. They learn food and beverage preparation and sanitation along with management and marketing skills and communication and computer technology skills. Upon completion of the program, students earn an associate degree in Applied Science. The program holds full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and is offered at both the Dover and Wilmington campuses. It is also a connected degree program which means that students can complete their associate degree and then transfer to a four-year degree program as juniors. In addition, Delaware Tech has dual admissions agreements with Delaware State University and Wilmington University.

University of Delaware

Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics

The University of Delaware began as a private academy in 1743, and its first class included a signer of the U.S. Constitution plus three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Chartered by Delaware in 1833, it became a Land Grant college in 1867. Today its seven colleges serve over 20,000 students and offers 3 associate degree programs, 147 bachelor’s degree programs, and over 150 graduate degrees. Classified by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a research university with a very high level of research activity, the school has also been continuously accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1921.

Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management Major

The University of Delaware’s four-year Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management (HRIM) major is ranked among the top ten hospitality programs in the nation. It limits program enrollment to 400 students and provides a business management curriculum with specialized courses that focus on the hospitality industry. The HRIM program also offers a program in conjunction with the Lerner College of Business and Economics that allows students to finish their undergraduate program and earn an MBA in just five years. In addition, the HRIM major prepares students for leadership roles in the hospitality industry with an experience-driven focus that requires 700 hours of paid work experience plus 100 hours of community service. Students gain hands-on experience at the Vita Nova Restaurant and Courtyard by Marriott, an on-campus and student-operated laboratory with state-of-the-art dining, lodging and conference facilities. This laboratory allows students to develop front office, housekeeping, marketing, revenue management and sales skills.

Hospitality Business Management (HBM) MS

The University of Delaware MS degree in Hospitality Business Management (HBM) prepares its graduates for careers in consulting and e-commerce as well as operations management. The curriculum emphasizes problem solving and decision making skills to meet the needs of the thriving hospitality and tourism industries. This program requires 30 credits and has an accelerated one-year completion period as well as a two-year dual MS/MBA option that requires 27 additional credit hours. The major also includes a one-week “Industry Immersion Program” consisting of workshops conducted by industry leaders on pertinent topics and issues in the hospitality industry like revenue management or social media metrics.
